Areej Kaoud
Areej Kaoud is a Palestinian visual artist raised in Sharjah and Gaza. Her art practice draws on her interest in narratives and disastrous scenarios. Emergency provisions are a common subject in her practice using writing, recording, performance art, data accumulation and installation. Kaoud’s art practice is concerned with diaspora psychology and emergency behaviour. Most of her concepts use language to articulate the distance between anxiety, preparedness and the humour which takes place in preparing for anticipated threats.
Her most prominent performances in the UK took place at the Museum of London Archaeological Gardens in 2022, at indigo+madder in 2020 where her first solo exhibition was held, and at Tate Modern in Tate Exchange in 2018. She completed a residency at Misk Art Institute in 2023, she was commissioned in 2022 by Glasgow University & Arts Canteen to produce Intimate Distance, and previously in 2019 by the New York University Art Gallery to produce a large-scale sculpture titled Unknown Safety. Kaoud’s work has been shown at Art Dubai, Bolivia Biennale, Delfina Foundation, ISCP New York, Tashkeel, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, The Hangar, JPFN Museum and Satellite in Al-Serkal Avenue.
Kaoud completed a masters in Fine Art Curating at Goldsmiths College. Her art practice progressed as conceptual without being attached to any one medium. Kaoud has worked as an Adjunct Professor at American University of Sharjah and copy editor at Sharjah Art Foundation. She currently works and lives between Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, and London, United Kingdom.
